The Ho Chi Minh Trail was not one avenue, but rather a network of trails, extending along the Laos-Vietnam border, over steep mountainous terrain into Western and Southern Vietnam and Northern Cambodia. It served as the primary Viet Cong supply line and was used to move goods and troops secretly. It has even been called the “lifeline” of the war in South Vietnam (Correll, 2005). As personnel and material movement along the Trail increased, the U.S. became increasingly concerned. The US began use of sustained air strikes on the Ho Chi Minh Trail (Wells-Dang, 2000). The operation, as well as the geographic region of the Laotian panhandle south of Mu Gia Pass, was named Steel Tiger (Correll, 2005). Read more →
